Etobicoke local donates proceeds from rare Mercedes to Best Buddies and WaterStone Foundation Inc.

ETOBICOKE – Local Etobicoke residents Kim and Terry Duffy donated $216, 000 from the sale of their 2008 Mercedes SLR McLaren to Best Buddies Canada and WaterStone Foundation Inc.

The SLR McLaren is a very rare sports car and was produced in 2008-09.   Only 300 were ever made.  The Duffy’s purchased the car in 2009.

The Duffy’s fetched $216,000 for the luxury vehicle and generously donated two thirds of the selling price, $144,000, to Best Buddies Canada, and the remaining third going to the WaterStone Foundation Inc.

“The satisfaction felt in helping a person in need will last a lifetime, while driving a sports car is a fleeting moment of self-indulgence,” said Terry.

The donation will help start Best Buddies in more schools across Canada.  “This kind of donation by the Duffy’s will help children with intellectual disabilities experience things they might not have had the chance to, if they were not a part of the program.” said Steven Pinnock, Executive Director of Best Buddies Canada.  “Best Buddies gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to do things that others take for granted such as going for coffee, out to a movie or simply enjoying the company of a friend”.

The Duffy’s are local philanthropists and have supported Best Buddies for a number of years.  “In reflection, the SLR McLaren is a beautiful, exciting automobile in every way, but nothing compares to how powerful the act of giving to those in need can be!” said Mr. Duffy.

Best Buddies Canada is national charitable organization operating in over 300 elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities across Canada. A friendship program, Best Buddies matches students with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Locally, the program operates at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School, Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School,  Central Etobicoke Collegiate,  Richview Collegiate and Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School.
