There are several ways that you can help Best Buddies Canada enhance our communities through one-to-one friendships between people with intellectual disabilities and students.

University / College Students

Each University/College Best Buddies chapter requires committed student volunteers to be matched in a one-to-one friendships with adults with intellectual disabilities. Student volunteers can also take on a leadership role with their chapter in addition to being matched with an adult with an intellectual disability.

High School Students

Each High School Best Buddies chapter requires committed student volunteers to be matched with other students in one-to-one friendships. Student volunteers can also take on a leadership role with their chapter in addition to being matched with another student.

High School Teachers

Each Best Buddies chapter requires committed teachers to help match students with and without intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships.

Adults with an Intellectual Disability

Adults with intellectual disabilities can volunteer to be matched in a one-to-one friendship with a university or college student, and to be part of the chapter leadership team.

The positions available to you as an adult:

Buddy

An adult with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a university or college student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddies call their “Peer Buddies” on the telephone once per week, and see them every two weeks. All Buddies must apply through the partner agency for a particular chapter.

Buddy Advocate

An adult with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a university or college student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddy Advocates are part of the Leadership Team of a Best Buddies chapter. They present their and the Buddies’ opinions to make decisions accordingly.

Adults who work for an Agency

Each University/College Best Buddies chapter requires a host site. A host site is a group home, supported employment program or community association, working directly with adults with intellectual disabilities, that forms a partnership with Best Buddies to recruit and match Buddies with students.
