The Citizens Program

The Citizens Program

Best Buddies Citizens builds one-to-one friendships between adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This program bridges the gap for individuals who have aged out of our school-based programs, offering life-enriching social opportunities, increased independence, and a strong sense of belonging in the community.

Please note that this program is currently being launched in Calgary and Winnipeg. If you’re interested, we can add you to a waitlist until we’re able to offer support in additional cities

How It Works

The Citizens program matches adults based on similar interests, personalities, and location. These “Buddy Pairs” commit to a one-year friendship, connecting weekly (via phone, text, or social media) and meeting at least twice a month — in person or virtually.

In addition to these individual meetups, each Citizens Chapter hosts monthly group events like potlucks, bowling nights, holiday parties, or coffee chats. These inclusive events expand social circles and help build a vibrant, welcoming community.

MATCHING

Buddy Pairs are thoughtfully matched based on:

  • Shared hobbies and interests
  • Preferred communication styles
  • Proximity and availability

Participants receive training, resources, and ongoing support to ensure confidence and comfort in their friendships.

GROUP ACTIVITIES

Each Citizens Chapter hosts monthly events for all
participants. These may include:

  • Holiday parties
  • Potlucks and picnics
  • Board game nights
  • Fitness or art workshops
  • Community service projects

Group outings create more ways to connect, have fun, and build community.

What is a Host Site?

A host site is a community agency or service provider that supports adults with IDD and partners with Best Buddies to co-facilitate a Citizens Chapter. Host sites are critical to the success of the program — they help recruit participants, support buddy matches, and promote inclusive activities.

Each host site designates a Host Site Coordinator (HSC) who collaborates with Best Buddies staff and the Chapter Advisor to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The HSC agrees to:

  • Help recruit and support adult participants with IDD
  • Attend Citizens Chapter events and meetings
  • Work closely with the Chapter Advisor to help match participants
  • Provide ongoing support to buddy pairs
  • Submit and manage membership applications onBest Buddies Online
  • Monitor matches and communicate with Best Buddies staff

By working together, the host site and Best Buddies create a structured, inclusive environment where friendships can thrive.

Before applying, email info@bestbuddies.ca to request a VSC letter from Best Buddies — this may qualify you for a free or reduced rate. If you’re charged a fee, we’ll reimburse you as long as the VSC is made out to Best Buddies Canada.

Once you receive your VSC, please email both the completed VSC and your payment receipt to info@bestbuddies.ca. From there, you’ll hear from your Chapter Leader with next steps.
